The comic Bruce Lee was created in 1971 as inspired by the movie The Big Boss starring Bruce Lee. Despite the low tide of the industry, Vincent Kwong managed to make a breakthrough with his innovative ideas of the martial art combat genre, which later became the mainstream in Hong Kong. The legendary title is one of the longest running comics in Hong Kong publishing for almost 40 years. Thanks to the conscientious illustrator, the series did not come to a break until 2009. The comic series has evolved with Hong Kong by the lapse of time. It witnessed the change of the city’s culture and nurtured many comic stars. Without a doubt, it enjoys a stature in the city’s contemporary culture.

Vincent Kwong followed his brother to join the comic industry at the age of 11. In 1971, he started the long comic strips Bruce Lee, whose circulation was on a par with Tony Wong’s Tiger & Dragon Heroes. It is also one of the longest running comics in Hong Kong.

In the mid-60s, Kwong founded the Good Friend Comics Journal and Peter Pan Comics Daily; in mid-70s, he founded four comic papers, namely Hei Pao, Ching Pao, Tong Pao and Comic Strip Daily.

After a brief spell in Jademan Comics, he established 82 Comic House and Kwong's Printing Company Limited.

Cowboy was created in Wong’s 4-panel comic series in the 70s and 80s. The whole series came in 40 volumes telling interesting stories happened in Cowboy’s family, especially between the father and son, in a fun and warm way. The comic work also reflected the social condition in Hong Kong. Wong managed to tell stories vividly with only pictures. The comics sometimes go with short titles but rarely with words.

The Macau-born artist, born Wong Wing-hing, was a teacher in Macau in 1950s and learnt illustrating after work. In 1965, he was employed by Ming Pao and started cooperating with Alphonso Wong with a comic series, while drawing illustrations for Louis Cha's novels.

During 1971 and 1980, Wong composed 4-panel comic strips Father and Son, Cowboy, Debussy and Gorgeous Susan, whereas Cowboy was later compiled into a 40-volume comic book and was very well received in the market.

Shau Sing Chai is a character in the 73 Comic Series. Using punti Cantonese and making unique character modeling, hilarious and humorous presentation, the comic series has gained wide popularity among youngsters. It is the first comic strip that established its fan club and with which figurines and T-shirts featuring its characters were made. Shau Sing Chai is also the first comic strip open for readers’ contributions, nurturing many comic talents for the industry.

The locally born comic artist took to comic illustration at the age of 16. He became a comedian master in the comic industry with the release of Shau Sing Chai and Siu Keung Comic Collection. He is known to enjoy good personal network and ready to help budding comic artists.

Shadow, a key role in A Man Called Hero, is a swordsman under Pride, Hero Wah’s master. Wearing a mask all the time, Shadow had his face disfigured and lost both his arms. Despite his apathy and reticence, he follows Hero Wah after Pride’s death and is a loyal comrade.

Woody Woody Wood is Lai’s first comic strip published in the Yellow Bus. Playful and humorous Woody Woody Wood and his good friend often make up funny and amusing scenes. In the illustrator’s eyes, Woody Woody Wood is a mixture of Lisa Simpson in The Simpsons and Old Master Q as he is as cute as a candy with the afro of Lisa Simpson and the chubby body of Old Master Q.

The local comic artist, also a cross-media creator, has been active in the comic scene for more than 20 years. Having published more than 20 comic works until today, Lai made his debut in 1995 with the comic strip Picking Up A Pig Tale. His weirdly colorful and amusing style has assumed wide popularity among readers. In 2005, he published the comic title Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, of which the rich and strong composition won the favor of European publishers, and thus the publication of the title’s French version by the end of 2007. In recent years, Lai issued his self-funded publication Barbecue Inferno Series: The Pork Chops Inferno and The Meatballs Inferno. In 2018, The Pork Chops Inferno was adapted into a theatre work to be staged in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

The comics The Legend of the Condor Heroes was adapted from Louis Cha's most representative novel. The female protagonist Huang Rong is the daughter of "Eastern Heretic" Huang Yaoshi and the wife of Guo Jing, disciple of "Northern Beggar" Hong Qigong. Elphonso Lam is a comic artist, musician, graphic designer, toy designer, fashion designer, storyboarder, columnist and host all rolled into one. The locally born hard-core figure in pop culture published his debut comic series True Love in 1994, followed by his representative works The Jam and Super Seven. Lam devoted himself to cross-media development, with creation involved in projects across comics, music, fashion, toy, product, video and film.

Lam’s illustration books GOODGIRL and SUPER GOOD GOODGIRL published in 2006 and 2016 respectively have both received very favourable reviews. In 2009, Lam organised his first personal exhibition in Taipei and Hong Kong in celebration of his 20th career anniversary, which was a huge success. In 2012, he represented Hong Kong to attend “Kaleidoscope – History of Hong Kong Comics Exhibition” in Taipei. In 2017, he was one of the Hong Kong representatives to participate in the exchange activity and demonstrate comic drawing at the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d’Angoulême in France.

Phoenix Wu Shuang is the protagonist in the martial arts chivalry comic series Peerless Warriors. The story begins in the last years of the Southern Song Dynasty where Phoenix Wu Shuang, his brothers and a group of heroes bravely confront the Mongol invasion.

Ho Chi-man started his comic career when he entered Jademan Ltd. in 1982. He became an independent artist in 1984 and worked for a few local comics publishers in later years, working on several comic titles at the same time. In over a decade, Ho’s published comic works encompass a wide diversity of styles, including love and romance, law, science fiction, martial arts chivalry and thriller, etc. In 1997, his comic adaptation of novel Legendary Siblings received a favorable review. The comic series has won him a widespread readership and awards in the comic field, while his original comic series Peerless Warrior continues to garner support from readers!

Eight Enigmas are eight key characters in The Ravages of Time, a group of elite military strategists trained by Mr. Shuijing (Sima Hui). All eight members are the most sought-after military strategists among the vassals. Except a few original characters, most members of the Eight Enigmas are created based on real historical figures. In April 2001, Chan published The Ravages of Time, a breakthrough to conventional viewpoint on the Three Kingdoms period with new storyline, narrative approach and unique style. 18 years since it was released, the comic series has been published in major cities and countries in Asia, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Indonesia and China.

The comic series White Cat Black Cat was created in 2004. Q for Question: The white cat Q Boy is curious about everything and like to ask questions. A for Answer: His uncle the black cat Doctor A is an erudite scholar who knows almost everything. With their interaction, children can learn efficiently and happily by reading the funny comics.

The renowned local comic artist used to be art director and creative director of newspapers and magazines. In the 1990s, Ma devoted himself to full-time comic creation, with his illustrated comic columns in major newspapers covering current affairs, politics, and humor. In 2004, he collaborated with Fong She Mei on the White Cat Black Cat series and more than 300 books were published within eight years. The White Cat Black Cat are funny and adorable under his pen. The comic series not only shares an endless stream of jokes, but more importantly marries humor with knowledge. It is loved by children and recommended by teachers and parents.

On On and Guy Guy were created by Siuhak in 2004, as inspired by An An and Jia Jia, the two giant pandas kept in the Ocean Park. Turning a deaf ear to what they do not want to hear, On On and Guy Guy make a lot of Hong Kong style Cantonese jokes. The comic work also makes a mock of local instant culture and current affairs. The two panda-a-pandas often forget their own names, bearing a resemblance to Hong Kong people in post-handover era who have to re-recognize their identity. Siuhak’s famous works include the Fake Forensic Science series.

Graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Graphic Design from the School of Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1996, Siuhak engaged in local illustrations, comics, animations and scriptwriting on a freelance basis. In 2004, he formed the comic group “Springrolllll” with Craig Au Yeung, Eric So, Yeung Hok Tak and Chi Hoi. From 2004 to 2008, he was a guest tutor in the School of Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He started to compose lyrics for canto pop in 2008.

Siuhak’s best known works include the Fake Forensic Science comic series and http://www.bitbit.com.hk. He is active in the advertising field by co-launching crossover programs with renowned brands, while he also participates in shopping mall promotion activities. Mandycat, Pisces, a cat lover who sees cat as her soulmate. She loves drawing from an early age and loves to observe silly things in life and express her feelings with a few simple strokes. After college, Mandycat worked as an editor for various magazines in Hong Kong, while her comics were seen on numerous newspapers and magazines. Mandycat has been a full-time writer and illustrator since 2011. She draws and writes columns on different platforms covering a vast range of topics, including cats, love and relationships, office life and silly things. Following her success, Mandycat has launched her own line of products. Mandycat has a series of “he she it” books and a series of books inspired by office life, which are collections of her much-loved column “office weekly” at Yahoo. To this day, more than 20 books were published. In February 2015, she was invited to participate in the International Comic Festival held in Angouleme, France. In 2017, she was the winner of Hong Kong Golden Book Awards. In 2018, Mandycat received the Distinguished Alumni Communicator Award from the School of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University.

The White Bear comes from a lonely planet, wishes to encounter his fellows through giving. The Boy, an ordinary child like you and me, wishes he could fly one day to search for a different self in another corner of the world. One day in summer, the Boy met the White Bear. Since then, the White Bear stays with the Boy and becomes his guardian angel. They support and encourage each other, moving forward together to discover the more beautiful new world.

Comic artist Bigsoil graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Graphic Design from the Department of Graphic Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He once served as the art director for Hong Kong Commercial Radio and Metro Radio. Bigsoil published his comic works in a daily column The World In My Eyes in the local newspaper Oriental Daily. His published works include In The City, We Dream, A Lelecooper Travelogue, Always Out There, In The City, We Dream revised version 2011, Love Is… and To Love Oneself, etc. In 2011, Always Out There was selected in the 23rd Secondary Students’ Best Ten Books Election, while an animated version of Always Out There won the fifth place in Japan’s DigiCon6 Hong Kong Regional Award. Besides his creative endeavours, Bigsoil teaches illustration in several government-funded tertiary institutions. Meanwhile, he hosts talk shows on Hong Kong Metro Radio Finance Channel and Metro Digital Life Channel. In 2018, Bigsoil partnered with artist Karena Lam to create a children book series to raise funds for End Child Sexual Abuse Foundation.

Old Girl is a female creature between a teenge girl and a mature woman ever keeping a young mind. Old Girl is surrounded by handsome guys, but they are either married, in a relationship, or gay. Spicing up her dull life is old girl’s everyday task.

The Old Girl’s Diary is a collection of Stella So’s self-appeasement and a tribute to her master and favourite cat Ting Ting.

Stella So was a graduate from the School of Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Her final year project, animation Very Fantastic, was winner of the 8th Hong Kong Independent Short Film Competition in 2002 and was invited to a couple of film festivals abroad. Presented in a Chinese copybook, the animation based itself on the city’s old districts to induce readers’ reverie and expectation to Hong Kong’s culture.

So’s published works include Very Fantastic, City of Powder – The Disappearing Hong Kong, The Old Girl’s Diary, etc. The animation in the music video “Lost” (下落不明) by Hong Kong singer Anthony Wong (黃耀明) and the illustration in Eason Chan (陳奕迅)’s album “Don't Want To Let Go” (不想放手) were created by her. Meanwhile, she worked with brands to create animation advertisements and posters. Her art works can also be found on walls in MTR HKU Station and MTR tickets.

Suet Ching is the soul of "Happy Life Pad". She grows up in a poor but warm big family. Most of her stuff are second-hand, for example books from her elder brother, but luckily the used books appear new as her brother doesn’t like reading. She also wears third-hand clothes from two elder sisters. Suet Ching has been easy-going, open-minded but careless since childhood. She wishes to live happily forever with her three adopted stray pets like in the fairy tale.

The locally born artist commenced her comic career in early 1990s with her debut comic series released in “Yes!”, a popular magazine at that time. In 2007, she founded her own publishing house and “Happy Life Pad” was published in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. The picture book series, known for its amusing, warm and sweet style, was a smash hit. In recent years, Suet Ching begins to adapt fiction into comics. In 2016, her girl serial comics “Date with Wizard” was launched on an original comics mobile app in China. In 2018, she serialized her new comic series “My Lovely Kayla” on the US comics app Tapas. Her representative works include “Happy Life Pad”, “Twinkle Star”, "Toast family", etc.

K is a story of a Chinese agent refitted from the 007 structure with the inclusion of light jokes in his exciting tasks. Like James Bond, K retains a loose and romantic attitude and a hero-like character who shares human’s weaknesses, while his Chinese identity is highlighted in the story.

Embarking on the comics industry in 1982, Li Chi-tak left Jademan Comics a month later to pursue his comic career as an independent artist. His works were issued in Japan and published in Taiwan and France.

Li’s comic works go on a wide variety of styles and topics covering science fiction, marital arts chivalry, romance and philosophy…that has undoubtedly reflected the value of comics as a form of art.

In recent years, Li also got involved in other fields in the art industry, which has helped take his comics to a new level with these art elements.

Samba is a wild child who comes from the forest and lives in the city. He wears green underpants of wild men all the time. He does not like wearing shoes. He can only speak single words but is able to communicate with people by his special facial expression and body language. Therefore, he has a wide circle of acquaintances all over the world ranging from humans, animals to even aliens. Samba has very good appetite and unlimited energy. He only eats, plays and sleeps every day. Thus, he is always filled with vitality and positive energy. He loves nature, adventure and his family. He is righteous but likes playing tricks on his elder brother who looks after him every day. He creates laughter in every moment and is a happy child in everybody’s mind.

CK Keung studied illustration design and started drawing comics under the influence of Japanese comic artist Akira Toriyama. Having won the Comics Rising Talent Award by Rightman Publishing Ltd in 1999, he has been one of the most popular children comic artists in Hong Kong, who published a number of relaxing and amusing comic works under CO-CO!, including The Thirty-Six Stratagems, Samba Amigo, and Samba Family, etc. The Samba series also gained much appreciation from publishing houses in China and Singapore, which later published the simplified Chinese and English versions of the comics. In 2008, the series even won the Best Children Comics Award of the 4th Golden Dragon Award Original Comic & Animation Competition. In 2015, Keung was invited by Hong Kong Arts Centre to be one of the Hong Kong representatives to participate in the exchange activity at the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d’Angoulême in France. The following year, he authorized Hong Kong Tramways to use his comic creation for interior decoration in trams. In 2017, Keung was invited to participate in the creation of large outdoor wall painting, and thus the display of a large Samba painting on the wall of Hong Kong Arts Centre in Wanchai.

Stories of Little Horse are rich in Hong Kong flavor, telling silly and funny things from a dull life that make readers burst into laughter.

Maggie Lau was an office lady before turning to full-time comic illustration by chance. In Hong Kong Book Fair 2007, she released Little Horse’s Silly Life, a record of interesting anecdotes in her daily life, which immediately topped the selling chart. In December 2007, Little Horse’s Silly Life 2 was published, which was sought-after and once sold out. In the following years, Lau made an incredible achievement in the industry with a number of sequels invariably climbed to top of the selling chart. Her success aroused the interest of major organizations to invite her for cooperation to launch products and exhibitions featuring Little Horse’s family.

A small penguin that follows the penguin family to come to Hong Kong. It can change anywhere it stays into a playground. It can play with anything and have lots of fun! Its motto is “the world is a big playground”.

Kong Khong-chang, also known as Kong Kee, claims that he does not have the ability to differentiate between comedy and tragedy, making people hesitate about whether to cry or to laugh. The locally born comic artist has published a series of works, which include Imperfect Shoes, Ricegas, Hijacking - Comic Hong Kong Literature (co-authored by Chihoi), Pandaman, Ding Ding Penguin, etc. In 2015, Kong was invited to launch the comic strip Travel to Hong Kong with the renowned British band Blur. In 2009, he co-founded Penguin Lab with Lawman for multi-media development and product creation. His animation Howl the Mobile Fatty won the Silver Award of Best Digital Entertainment (Animation) in the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2013; his animation Saveur Tèrèbenthine was selected as the finalist in the animation category of the 20th ifva Awards 2015 and the 16th DigiCon6 Awards in Japan. In 2016, his comic character Ding Ding Penguin became one of the statues on Hong Kong Avenue of Comic Stars and Ani-Com Park@Harbour"FUN". In 2017, his animation Dragon’s Delusion co-directed with Lee Kwok-wai and Tsui Ka-hei won the “DigiCon6 Asia Gold Mention” Award by TBS in Japan.

Lobintan has a round face and a mushroom head. With rich facial expressions, she is the artist’s self-portrait and the protagonist of the comic series. Lobintan is lazy and sometimes acts unrealistically. She pursues a simple life with a simple mind, thinking that life is all about eating, sleeping and pooing!

The locally born artist started sharing her comic diaries online since 2008. A year later, a publisher invited her to release her first picture book. Since then she releases picture books annually. With a collection of amusing, warm and pure stories of daily life that reveal positive thinking with a little idleness, Lobintan’s comic works have gained wide popularity among readers over the years.

Cuson, also known as Uncle Weird, is a middle-aged indoorsy geek and a slave for cats. He is extremely pessimistic, quiet, introverted, smileless, weak-minded, arrogant, self-abased, narcissistic, and he resists any warm and romantic scenes. He is a man who spreads negative energy everywhere.

Cuson Lo, a Hong Kong popular illustrator and comic artist, announced his works on online platforms such as his personal blog and Facebook page, which has gained him much popularity on the Internet. Lo was a comic artist for newspaper am730, while he also serializes his comics works on various media.

Initially, Lo drew political comics just for fun, but as his works are getting more popular and widely shared on the social media, he decided to continue his drawing.

Din-dong, a silly cat kept by the illustrator, is full of positive energy and dreams and likes to collect surplus resources. Exhibitions featuring Din-dong were on display in Hong Kong Harbour City, LCX, Olympian City, APM, and the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Japan. Din-dong was awarded the 4th Asiagraph Jury Special Work in Tokyo, Japan, while its animation was broadcast in the Nippon Television Network Corporation as well as in the 34th Hong Kong International Film Festival. The illustrated story of Ding-dong is published by instalments in China’s publications.

Postgal Workshop is a two-person comic group where Pam Hung is mainly responsible for script writing and John Chan for art creation. Both artists are cat lovers. They think that mankind living in nature and the universe are as tiny as a cat flea. Therefore, they adopted the name Postgal Workshop, which is homonym to “cat flea” in Cantonese. The duo has received numerous awards, for example “Hong Kong Arts Development Awards－The Best Artist Award, and their works were awarded the grand prize in Japan TBS animation competition, which followed with an interview invitation from Yomiuri Shimbun in Japan. The Din-dong series, a representative comic work by the duo, was published by Joint Publishing HK.

God Legion revolved in the Shang and Zhou dynasty in China, when human co-habited with gods on the earth. The gods having superior wisdom and strength, human beings are in awe of and obedient to them. The protagonist of the story is Doggie, an offspring of a human and a god. Disgruntled at the gods’ long-term suppression and ruling to human, he decides to challenge the god’s authority.

In 2006, he founded his own publishing house as an independent artist with his debut comic work Fire Dragon in Japanese style. In addition, he was the editor in chief for a series of comics, including The Legend Of Evil And God Vol. I to III, Quadra Spirit, Valkyria Phoenix, Fire Dragon, God Legion and When Geek Meets Serial Killer. When Geek Meets Serial Killer was later adapted into a film.

In Blood & Steel, Daojin Hu Linglan is a swordswoman from the country of Samo in Japan who masters the skill in fighting with Odachi. Brave and persistent, the heroine travels to China to find Jing Lie who turns his back on their engagement. She married Jing Lie in the end.

Felix Ip graduated from the Department of Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He has been the art director of Imagi Animation Studios since 2000. Ip was the director and production designer for Zentrix, the first original 3D-CG animated TV series in Hong Kong; he was also the art director for animated films Ninja Turtles and Astro Boy. In 2010, Ip joined Unicorn Studios and worked on the comic adaption of the famous novel Blood & Steel. He is now a freelance creator and participates in various forms of comic and animation creation. His comic works include Blood & Steel, Hong Kong Infection∙Mong Kok Station, Robox Sketchbook, etc.

Tornado is a character in the comics Kowloon Walled City who was addressed as “Big Brother” in the City. When the protagonist Chan Lok-kwan escaped from the hunting and killing by the big boss, Tornado saved Chan and fought against the big boss. He won the fight at last but was seriously injured and died with a smile.

Andy Szeto is a comic artist of the new generation with very strong personal style. Earlier in 1997, he fascinated the readers with his comic title Super God Z, which sold for more than 100,000 copies. Szeto later achieved continued success in the industry. In 2014, his work Kowloon Walled City was awarded Bronze Award of the 7th Japan International MANGA Award 2014. It was the first time for a thin volume Hong Kong comic book to win an international award, which was also a demonstration of Hong Kong comic’s reputation globally.

A new-generation creator who comes from the comic industry, and strives to have breakthrough by writing and publishing the novel Kowloon Walled City. The popular novel was later adapted into comics and was awarded Bronze Award of the 7th Japan International MANGA Award in 2014.

Bai Lang is the protagonist of the comic series Journey to the West, a member of the team to return Buddhist scriptures. Bai Lang was saved by the King of Dragon on Tienyu Mountain, and cultivated himself to become a wolf spirit in human form. Later, the heavenly army invaded the Dragon Palace on Tienyu Mountain, Bai Lang left the mountain with the scriptures and began the pilgrimage to the West. In the journey, a demon appeared in Bai Lang’s mind but he was purified when he met his master Tang Xuanzang again in the old town.
